Welcome to Business Ownership 101. We’re building a digital resource to provide information, tools, resources and encouragement for aspiring and budding entrepreneurs and business owners looking to take the next steps to grow their businesses.
I started working in a “mom & pop” jewelry store when I was thirteen. It was a great first job that gave me an inside look at a small retail business. I worked in a variety of jobs in high school and college and earned a couple of Bachelor degrees and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering. While working on my Master’s I started working at a small consulting firm where it was the owner and an administrative assistant and me. It was a chance to get a close up look at the ownership and operations of a service business.
While working as a traffic engineer and transportation planner I did lots of work in a variety of computer systems. I always enjoyed learning new technology. In the late 2000s I started learning about online business opportunities and the tools and skills that were needed to build an online business. I got so caught up in learning the skills and the tools that I never really got around to building an online business…however I was able to turn those skills into a freelance service business doing SEO research and strategy planning for several local businesses.
That lasted for a year or two and then I got the opportunity to go to work as an IT Systems Administrator at a manufacturing company. This was yet another opportunity to learn a new business model (logistics, warehousing, production, R&D, and order fulfillment) by running the networks and systems that supported all of those operations. But even as I was learning this new career I knew I still wanted to build my own business.
My wife and I had been involved in MLM (multilevel marketing) early in our marriage. It was a good opportunity and we enjoyed the people we were working with, it just wasn’t the right fit for me. Now we had a chance to build something together again. We were able to put together the resources to start a business we had been planning for a while: a brick-and-mortar music lesson studio with a coffee shop. We planned and worked and started from scratch. Over a period of several years we grew and had about a dozen music instructors and about 100 students per week taking lessons and had a steady coffee shop business and were doing over $10,000 a month…then came the Spring of 2020. Yep…COVID-19.
While we tried to pivot to remote video lessons, things dropped off significantly and I knew it would be difficult to regain the previous levels of business. So that’s when I decided it was time to renew my efforts to build an online business building on the technical skills and knowledge I had gained years earlier and the business ownership experience I had gained over my working career. But this time I would actually build a business instead of just learning a bunch of new skills and tools.
SO WHY SHOULD YOU CARE…
Business ownership is something that many people aspire to achieve. I have had a chance to gain a good bit of experience in this arena and have had some good experiences and bad experiences and have had both success and failure. So I wanted a chance to share my experiences to help others, as well as provide a platform where we can grow and move forward together.
As a group of people with common goals we can learn from each other, learn from respected business leaders and achieve more than we could on own.
THAT’S WHAT BUSINESSOWNERSHIP101.COM IS ABOUT
On this platform we will provide resources to help us all build the businesses that we dream about. There will be informative articles. Testimonials. Success stories. Lessons learned. Tools. And other things that we don’t even know about yet that will help us along the way.
